Welshman claims third Rally Japan victory as Toyota extends championship advantage on home soil
Toyota Gazoo Racing World Rally Team delivered a commanding performance at Rally Japan, locking out the top four positions and securing its fourth consecutive home victory with the GR Yaris Rally1.
Elfyn Evans and co-driver Scott Martin emerged victorious after controlling much of the rally, leading team-mates Sébastien Ogier, Sami Pajari and Takamoto Katsuta in a remarkable 1-2-3-4 finish on the demanding asphalt roads of Aichi and Gifu prefectures.
The result strengthens Toyota's position in both the drivers' and manufacturers' championships while further cementing the GR Yaris Rally1's reputation as the benchmark car on asphalt.
EVANS CLAIMS THIRD JAPAN TRIUMPH
Evans once again demonstrated his affinity for Rally Japan, securing his third victory in the event's last four editions.
The Welshman laid the foundations for success on Friday, taking full advantage of his road position on the notorious Isegami's Tunnel stage to establish an early lead. From there, Evans and Martin carefully managed their advantage despite constant pressure from team-mates throughout the weekend.
Victory marks Evans' 13th career WRC win and his milestone 50th World Rally Championship podium. It also extends his lead in the drivers' standings to 20 points at the halfway stage of the season.
"It's a great feeling to be able to win Rally Japan again and be part of another very good result here for our team," Evans said.
"We were able to make a good start to the rally and take advantage of our position on Friday, and then we managed to maintain that until the end. It's been an enjoyable last dance with these cars on asphalt and I'm really happy to end it with a win."
OGIER PUSHES HARD BUT SETTLES FOR SECOND
Defending Rally Japan winner Sébastien Ogier entered the final day hoping to challenge Evans for victory but ultimately had to settle for second place.
Alongside co-driver Vincent Landais, the eight-time world champion mounted a determined challenge but never quite found the pace required to overhaul his Welsh team-mate. The pair finished 12.8 seconds behind the winners while helping Toyota secure another dominant team result.
"I came here with the aim to win, so I can't be fully satisfied with second place," Ogier admitted.
"But it's hardly a bad result either. We fought as much as we could and helped secure another strong result for the team."
PAJARI CONTINUES IMPRESSIVE PODIUM RUN
Rising Finnish star Sami Pajari continued his remarkable consistency with another podium finish.
Together with co-driver Marko Salminen, Pajari secured his fifth podium in the last six rallies and his sixth top-three finish since achieving his maiden podium at Rally Japan last season.
Despite a challenging start to the weekend, the young Finn steadily increased his pace and collected several stage victories before sealing third place.
"It's a good feeling and it's nice to be back on the podium again," Pajari said.
"Since Friday we have had great pace and several stage wins, so overall it was very positive."
KATSUTA RECOVERS TO COMPLETE TOYOTA CLEAN SWEEP
Home favourite Takamoto Katsuta delighted Japanese fans by completing Toyota's historic top-four lockout.
The Japanese driver lost valuable time after suffering tyre damage on Friday morning but fought back strongly throughout the weekend. A stage victory on Sunday, combined with second place in both the Power Stage and Super Sunday standings, highlighted his pace on the final day.
Although disappointed to miss the podium in front of his home supporters, Katsuta contributed valuable points to Toyota's championship campaign.
"It's great that we could achieve a 1-2-3-4 finish for the team in Japan," Katsuta said.
"I'm not satisfied with my personal result, but it was nice that we could come back stronger and score important points."
SOLBERG SHOWS WINNING PACE DESPITE SETBACK
Oliver Solberg was another standout performer throughout the rally.
Making his Rally Japan debut in Toyota Rally1 machinery, the Swede was firmly in contention for victory before sliding wide in muddy conditions on Saturday and damaging the car's rear suspension.
After restarting on Sunday, Solberg dominated the final day, winning three of the six stages, claiming the Power Stage victory and securing maximum Super Sunday points.
"We had a fantastic feeling in the car and a great performance," Solberg said.
"Yesterday was disappointing, but I felt very good in the car again on the final day and I'm happy we could at least take the maximum points available on Sunday."
TOYOTA STRENGTHENS CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD
The result continues Toyota's extraordinary record at Rally Japan, with the GR Yaris Rally1 now unbeaten in four consecutive editions of the event.
Toyota also extended its manufacturers' championship advantage to 127 points, while the GR Yaris Rally1 achieved a remarkable milestone of 50 consecutive stage victories on asphalt across the last three WRC tarmac rallies.
Further success came in WRC2, where Toyota Gazoo Racing WRC Challenge Program driver Yuki Yamamoto secured his first WRC2 podium on home soil in a GR Yaris Rally2. Spanish driver Alejandro Cachón finished second after an intense battle throughout the weekend.
As the championship reaches its halfway point, Toyota heads into the gravel section of the season carrying significant momentum and healthy leads in both title races.
